Jacob Ladder E Phillips Oppenheim 9781495311246 Books Reviews
I liked this book very much, as I wanted to know what happens next to the young man. Will he finally get the girl? It could have been used as a modern drama on TV. Very enjoyable and I will be looking for other stories by this author.
Mr Jacob Pratt is bankrupt. He loaned money to his brother to prospect for oil in America and his own leather business has failed. Humiliated by his neighbors as he rides the train to London to discharge his debts, he leaves his customary first class compartment, and moves to the 3rd class carriage. Several years later, his brother strikes it rich and Jacob becomes wealthy. He also becomes the object of crooks, swindlers, kidnappers, and the impoverished nobility. With the help of his loyal neighbor, Dick Dauncey, he avenges himself of those who would steal his money. He has also fallen in love with Sybil Bultiwell, the daughter of a wealthy leather merchant who sought to swindle him.
Oppenheim was employed in the leather trade, and took over his father's leather business until he was in his thirties. He was overjoyed when one of his fans, who was also a leather merchant, bought out his business and allowed him to concentrate on writing full time. He uses the background of the leather business in several of his novels. He also wrote several novels which describe the effects on individuals of suddenly acquired wealth. (see The Amazing Quest of Mr. Earnest Bliss)
